Pearl Medical Centre organised an event on bowel cancer to raise awareness in the community at Ward End Library.
The event highlighted the many people affected by bowel cancer, the symptoms to look out for and the importance of being tested. The doctor delivering the talk explained how bowel cancer incidence is strongly related to age, with the highest rates being in older people aged 85-89. Blood in stool/looser stool that has persisted for 3 or more weeks are the most common symptoms in diagnosing bowel cancer.
Risk factors
Factors that can increase the risk of bowel cancer include:
- Older age
- Family history of bowel cancer
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Inactive lifestyle
